CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Katie Bowen, a 2016 alumni of the University of North Carolina and decorated member of Tar Heel teams from 2012-15, has been named to the New Zealand National Team that will compete in the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France.
Bowen, an Auckland native, played four years at Carolina as a defender and midfielder. She helped lead the Tar Heels to the 2012 NCAA championship as a freshman.
This will be Bowen’s second World Cup appearance for New Zealand. She was also on the 2015 team which played in the World Cup in Canada. Bowen also played for the Football Ferns, as the New Zealand women’s national team is known, in the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
Bowen is one of 23 players on the New Zealand World Cup Team. She currently plays for the Utah Royals of the National Women’s Soccer League.
Bowen has a total of 59 caps all-time with the Football Ferns, scoring three international goals in her career as a defender.
