Heels rout Belmont in NCAA First Round

The Tar Heels began their final journey of the season tonight with the first round of the NCAA Tournament as they played host to the Belmont Bruins at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, NC. Following the successes in securing the ACC Regular season and tournament titles, the Tar Heels hope to keep this momentum going all the way to the NCAA Championship. They started off right with tonight’s 5-0 rout of Belmont.

The Heels started off the scoring in the 22nd minute off of a goal from the ACC Tournament hero Alessia Russo. Just 1 minute later, Bridgette Andrzejewski would add to that score with a header off of a cross from Emily Fox. In the 28th minute, the Heels extended the lead to 3-0 after Emily Fox’s first goal of the season.

The second half scoring would continue in the 54th minute with Alessia Russo’s second goal of the night, finishing in the box with her left foot. The final goal of the night was scored by Ru Mucherera after a scramble in the box in the 63rd minute, to give the Heels their 5-0 lead that they would carry to the end of the match. It was a dominant effort from UNC defense as well, that did not allow a single shot all night.

Following UNC’s dominant victory over Belmont, the Tar Heels will continue with the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, as they face off with the University of Colorado.
