The North Carolina Tar Heels prevailed over the Colorado Buffaloes Friday night 1-0, to advance to the Sweet 16. The first half was full of near-misses for the Tar Heels as they attempted to jump out to an early lead on Colorado. In the 17th minute, a Bridgette Andrzejewski header was tipped just over the crossbar. Later in the 44th minute, Madison Schultz headed the ball towards goal where it collided with the right post. The half would end scoreless, despite the Tar Heels outshooting Colorado 10-1 in the first half.
In the second half, the Tar Heels got on the board quickly, as Brianna Pinto delivered a pass to Alessia Russo who was outside the box. Russo fired a shot perfect shot, threading the ball just inside the left post and just outside the outstretched hands of the Colorado keeper. The Tar Heels would hold on to the 1-0 lead for the rest of the match, advancing to the next round. In all, the Heels outshot the Buffaloes 20-5. It was yet another shutout at Dorrance Field for Carolina as they are yet to surrender a goal at home this season.
The next round will be Sunday at 1:00 PM, as the Heels take on Michigan for a spot in the Elite Eight.
